EMPIRICAL LABS LIL FREQ
Saturday, May 23, 2009
It’s a mono EQ made by the same company that makes the distressor. My friend Gary Noble loves these, I was his assistant when he mixed Amy Winehouse’s album. He’s not the only one, another really big engineer named KD likes these too, so I know they have to be useful. When I tried them they seemed kind of boring, I couldn’t get the EQ to sound glossy. I tried them on lead vocals and I tried them on drums. Gary loves the de-esser section on this box, but it did nothing for me. Gary’s much better at EQing than me, maybe that’s why they work for him. I like using the Neve 1073s because no matter where I turn the knobs it sounds great LOL.
So I’m not sure about the Lil Freq yet. I think like a producer/artist when I mix, I close my eyes and sweep through frequencies until something inspires me. I’m going to give this box another shot and then I’ll update this.
